Google I/O 2021

Here're the Interesting Things!

With Cinematic Moments, you can bring your photos to life:

You usually take the same shot two or three (or twenty) times when trying to get the perfect shot. Google will use neural networks to fill in the gaps between two nearly identical images by generating new frames in the gaps. This results in Cinematic scenes, which are vibrant, moving images. Professional animators will need hours to create this effect from scratch, but thanks to machine learning, Google can produce these moments automatically and add them to your Recent Highlights.

In the morning, see breakfast spots, and at night, see dinner spots:

Google is currently updating Maps to provide you with more detailed details depending on the time of day and when you're travelling. That means Google will bring you coffee shops in the morning when you need a caffeine fix and burger joints at night when you're hungry. Google will also make tourist attractions and local landmarks easier to find if you're on a weekend getaway.

Avoid the crowds caused by the busyness of the city:

Maps already demonstrates how busy specific locations are — in fact, more than 80 million people use Google's live traffic information every day. Google is now extending the feature to display the busyness of an entire city, so you can see how busy a neighbourhood or part of town is at any given time. This means you can use Maps to see which hotspots to avoid if you want to keep it low-key. If you're searching for the most famous places to visit, you can use area busyness to quickly identify the most lively areas.

While you're at it, unlock your car with your mobile:

In Android 12, Google is collaborating with car manufacturers to create a new wireless car key. You can use your phone to lock, unlock, and even start your car with this feature, and you won't even have to take it out of your pocket in some cases. You'll also be able to safely and remotely share your car key with friends and family because it's digital.

On Android, you can use Google Assistant to quickly open your notifications:

The biggest design update in Android since 2014 is in version 12. Google reimagined the entire experience, from colours to forms, light and motion, and made it easier to access some of the most commonly used features:

  • Long click the power button to bring up Google Assistant wherever you are.
  • Swipe down to see your latest notification shade, which gives you a quick overview of all your app notifications.
  • Google Pay and Device Controls have been added to your customizable fast settings to make it easier to access everything you need.
